The carillon was given by Charles M. Baird with 53 bells cast by the John Taylor Bell Foundry in Loughborough, England and was dedicated on December 4, 1936 by Wilmot F. Pratt.

Two bells that were added in 1966 were removed in 2011..

Baird's daughter Ruth Baird Larabee bequeathed a carillon to Texas Tech University that was installed in 1976.

City officials ordered streets within an area a half mile square in the campus district closed this afternoon during the dedicatory concert of .the University of Michigan's new carillon, that traffic noises might not mar the first official playing of the bells.
