The George Frederick Jewett Foundation donated a 49-bell John Taylor carillon to the cathedral in memory of its namesake and founder, who was a benefactor of the cathedral. The carillon was first played on December 24, 1968 and was dedicated on August 28, 1969 with a recital given by C. Harold Einecke.

The New Year's Eve concert could not be played because of the cold
weather.
"The English build their bells for what they consider very cold weather,
about 20 degrees above zero," explained Dr. Einecke, adding, "Our recent
severe weather wasn't hard on the bells, themselves, but rather on the
mechanism. Sealed gears make it impossible to get at the mechanism to do
anything."
