Rembert “Red” Horton (Class of 1930) and family donated a set of four Paccard bells as a Victory Peal in memory of his brother, Captain Lewis Samuel Horton, Jr., a 1940 Clemson graduate who was killed during the Battle  of San Pietro, Italy.  The bells were the start of a 47-bell carillon to be installed in Tillman Hall.  Horton's Victory Peal and two other bells were dedicated on June 8, 1985.

The remaining 41 bells were donated as memorials  and the carillon was dedicated on October 18, 1987 with a recital given by blind carillonneur Steven B. Knight.

A 48th bell was added in 2013.

A look inside Clemson University's carillon.
Dzuris said it is traditional for the carillonneur to ride up on a new bell as it is lifted.
Scared of heights, she's not sure she'll get the OK from the University to take a six-story vertical ride, but is figuring out ways to respect the tradition.
