The twenty-five bell carillon in the massive, handsome tower of Saint
Paul's Church had its beginning as a chime of eight diatonic bells cast by
Gillett and Johnston of Croydon, England, and installed in 1929. The eight
bells, given by Charles J. Seabrook in memory of bis parents, were played
for the first time on Sunday, May 26, 1929.
In February, 1953, seventeen new bells, cast in Holland by the Van Bergen
Foundry, were combined with the original eight, bringing the total number
of bells to twenty-five. The addition of the seventeen Van Bergen bells
was made possible, in part, by the Marguerite L. Thomas Bell Fund and by
substantial gifts from interested members of the church congregation.
