Wake Forest College moved to new campus in Winston-Salem that began construction in 1951 with a groundbreaking by President Harris S. Truman.  The Wait Chapel was the first building to be constructed and its belfry was designed to hold a 59-bell carillon, although no donor stepped forward until 1978, when the Very Reverend Charles Upchurch Harris (Class of 1935) donated a 47-bell Paccard carillon to honor his wife, Janet Jeffrey Carlile Harris.  The carillon was dedicated on November 4-5, 1978 with a recital given by James Lawson.

Janet Harris donated a 48th Paccard bell in 1981 to honor her husband.
