George G. Allen and William R. Perkins, associates of Duke University founder James B. Duke, gave a 50-bell carillon to the University. The bells were cast by the John Taylor Bell Foundry in Loughborough, England, and were dedicated on June 5, 1932 by Anton Brees. .
The carillon was named in
2018 in honor of J. Samuel Hammond, carillonneur at Duke University for 53
years, on the occasion of his retirement.
