The instrument began in 1927 as a gift from Colonel Frederick M. Alger and his wife Mary with 8 bells were cast by the Gillett and Johnston Bell Foundry in Croydon, England.
The instrument was enlarged to a carillon in 1952 with 39 new bells cast by the Petit and Fritsen Bell Foundry of the Netherlands and dedicated by Percival Price on May 25, 1952.
The carillon was refurbished in 2015 and one additional bell cast by the John Taylor Bell Foundry in Loughborough, England was added..
