Fleming H. Revell donated eight Whitechapel bells in 1924 that were installed in the Russell Sage Chapel at the Northfield Seminary for Young Ladies.
Carl C. McRoberts (Class of ’09) and James C. McRoberts donated a 47-bell Paccard carillon in memory of their parents, Mr. and Mrs. William J. McRoberts. The bells were cast with metal from the eight 1924 bells and the import duty was remitted by an act of Congress in 1967.
The carillon was dedicated on September 25, 1966 with a recital given by Arthur Bigelow. Milford Myhre presented a public concert at the McRoberts Memorial Carillon at Northfield School September 21, 1967.
The seminary merged with the Mt. Hermon School of Boys in 1971 and the schools were united on a single campus in Gill in 2005. The bells were moved in 2008 to the Rhodes Center for the Arts, which was paid for by a gift from the Class of 1958. The clavier was not moved and the relocated carillon can only be played from an electric keyboard.
The cost of moving the bells was paid through a gift from the Class of 1958.
