A 27-bell electric carillon was built one block north of the U.S. Capital building to honor longtime Ohio senator Robert A. Taft. The bells were cast by the Paccard Bell Foundry in France and dedicated on April 14, 1959.
The carillon and tower
were funded by popular subscription from every state in the nation. More
than a million dollars were collected.
