Mrs. Jane K. Sather left a bequest for a companile and 12-bell chime in honor of her husband, Peder Sather. The John Taylor bells were first played at the Berkeley v. University of Washington football game on November 3, 1917.
In 1976 the Class of 1928 sought out a suitable gift for their 50th anniversary, and decided on donating eight additional bells. Fundraising was quite successful and a total of 36 new Paccard bells were installed and first played on February 12, 1979 by Frank Pilling. The official dedication took place on April 5, 1979 by Margo Halstead and James B. Welch.
Jerry Chamber of the
class of 1928 and his wife Evelyn Hemmings Chambers of the class of 1932
donated an additional 13 Paccard bells in 1983,bringing the total number
of bells to 61.
